Started as a plantation in the early 1700’s Algiers could easily claim to be one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods although it really did not achieve “town” status until around 1800. Although it is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi, it is a part of the City of New Orleans. It has a large naval base which fuels the local economy and is home to several carnival krewes which rent or own warehouses to store their Mardi Gras floats. Algiers Point has come into its won as an upscale enclave connected by ferry boat to the Central Business District.
